Cape of Rodon: A Day Trip You'll Never Forget

Durrës Daily Tours

March 10, 2026

Cape of Rodon (Kepi i Rodonit) is one of Albania's best-kept secrets — a wild, wind-swept peninsula jutting into the Adriatic just 30 kilometers north of Durrës. Despite its proximity to the coast's busiest city, it feels like another world entirely.

The cape is dominated by the ruins of Skanderbeg Castle (Kalaja e Skënderbeut), built in the 15th century by Albania's national hero as a strategic lookout point against the Ottoman fleet. The castle walls are largely intact, and climbing them offers panoramic views of the open Adriatic and the Albanian coast stretching south.

The waters around Cape of Rodon are some of the clearest on the entire Albanian coast. Hidden coves along the western shore are only accessible by boat, and the sea caves carved into the limestone cliffs are spectacular for snorkeling. Marine life is abundant — expect to see octopus, sea bass, and the occasional sea turtle.

Getting there by road is an adventure in itself. The final stretch is unpaved, winding through pine forests and olive groves with the sea glinting through the trees. Alternatively — and this is our recommendation — take a boat from Durrës. The sail up the coast is stunning, and arriving by sea gives you access to beaches and caves that road travelers can't reach.

Pack a picnic, bring snorkeling gear, and plan to stay the whole day. There's a small restaurant near the castle, but supplies are limited. Sunscreen is essential — there's almost no shade on the peninsula.

Our Cape of Rodon Boat Trip departs from Durrës harbor three times a week and includes lunch on board, snorkeling gear, and a guided castle visit. It's consistently rated as our most popular tour.
