About Korce

The Little Paris of Albania

Korce is a cultured city in southeastern Albania with a character unlike anywhere else in the country. Its French-influenced architecture, broad boulevards, and deeply rooted cafe tradition earned it the nickname "Little Paris" — and while the comparison is affectionate rather than literal, the city's cosmopolitan spirit is unmistakable.

Sitting at 850 metres elevation on a fertile plain surrounded by mountains, Korce has been a crossroads of trade and culture for centuries. It was here that the first secular Albanian-language school opened in 1887, a defining moment in the national awakening. And it was here, during a brief French Protectorate in World War I, that European cafe culture took root so deeply it never left.

Today Korce draws visitors with its excellent museums, the annual beer festival, remarkable nearby churches at Voskopoje, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down, order another coffee, and stay a while longer than planned.

A Market Town at the Crossroads

Korce was founded as a market town at the crossroads of important trade routes connecting the Adriatic to the eastern Balkans. The area has been inhabited since antiquity, with Illyrian and later Roman settlements in the surrounding plains and mountains. Its strategic position between east and west would define its character for centuries to come.

Commercial Centre of the South

Under Ottoman rule, Korce grew into an important commercial centre. The Mirahori Mosque, built in 1484, and the Old Bazaar were established during this period, forming the heart of the city. Korce became known for its extensive trade connections with Thessaloniki and Istanbul, and its merchant class developed a cosmopolitan outlook that set the city apart from much of Albania.

The First Albanian School

In 1887, the first secular Albanian-language school was opened in Korce — a pivotal moment in Albanian national identity. At a time when Albanian was not officially taught anywhere, this school became a beacon of the national awakening (Rilindja). The event is still celebrated as a defining moment in Albanian history, and Korce proudly claims its role as the cradle of Albanian education.

The French Protectorate

1916-1920

The French Protectorate

During World War I, Korce came under French military administration — a brief but transformative period that left an outsized cultural legacy. The French introduced broad boulevards, cafe culture, and a francophone intellectual tradition that shaped the city's identity for generations. It was during this era that Korce earned its enduring nickname: "Little Paris of Albania."

Communist Era

Cultural life continued in Korce despite the restrictions of Enver Hoxha's communist regime. The Korce brewery, founded in 1928, kept operating throughout — becoming Albania's most beloved beer brand. The city's deep artistic traditions were channelled into state-approved forms, but the spirit of Korce's cultural identity proved impossible to extinguish entirely.

Culture & Traditions

Korce's cultural identity runs deeper than most Albanian cities. From its unique musical tradition to its festival calendar and cafe rituals, the city has preserved a way of life that blends Ottoman, French, and Albanian influences into something entirely its own.

Korce Beer Festival

Cafe Culture

The city's French-influenced tradition of long coffee conversations is central to Korce life. The boulevards and Old Bazaar are lined with cafes where locals spend hours over espresso and conversation — a living legacy of the French Protectorate era that earned Korce its "Little Paris" nickname.
